This Code of Conduct applies to all members of the Advanced Light Source (ALS) community, including users, staff, contractors, committee members, and visitors.
The ALS is committed to providing a safe, welcoming, and inclusive environment to support scientific discourse and discovery that operates in accordance with the ALS’s Core Values:
- Safety: ALS community members are expected to work within the established ALS safety requirements and promote a safe work environment whether they are in person or remote.
- Collaboration: ALS community members are expected to collaborate respectfully and be considerate of shared resources to achieve scientific goals through team science.
- Dedication: ALS community members must be committed to their work at the ALS and be proactive and diligent while carrying out their responsibilities.
- Diversity: ALS community members are expected to respect and appreciate the individual differences that stem from our backgrounds and cultures, including personality, opinion, and scientific understanding that is needed to foster an inclusive environment.
- Innovation: ALS community members are encouraged to think creatively and develop new approaches to solve challenges while staying within an approved scope of work.
- Integrity: ALS community members are responsible for adhering to the highest standards of research integrity and exhibiting ethical behavior in order to maintain trust with the scientific community, funding agencies, and the public.
Everyone at the ALS is responsible for maintaining an environment that is safe, non-threatening, professional, and free from harassment (including sexual harassment), discrimination, and retaliation. Retaliation of any kind against anyone who makes a good faith report is inconsistent with Berkeley Lab’s Core Values. Behavior that is inconsistent with the ALS’s and Berkeley Lab’s Core Values may result in suspension or revocation of access privileges, and the user’s home institution will be notified.
Should a member of the ALS community ever experience or observe behavior that is unsafe, threatening, intimidating, discriminatory, or unprofessional, resources are available to help.
ALS Community members should report observed, suspected, or apparent research misconduct to Berkeley Lab’s Research Compliance Office.
Other concerns regarding the ALS Code of Conduct can be reported to the ALS User Services Office.
