Several ALS staff were recognized by Berkeley Lab Director Mike Witherell at the annual director’s awards ceremony on November 30.
Zahid Hussain, retired senior scientist and deputy of the former Scientific Support Group, received the Berkeley Lab Citation “for achievements in leading the development of many innovative soft x-ray instruments, which have spawned a vibrant and world-leading soft x-ray user program at the Advanced Light Source.”
Ethan Crumlin, staff scientist, was recognized for receiving a DOE Early Career Research Award earlier this year, and also received the Director’s Award for Exceptional Early Scientific Career Achievement “for the scientific advancement in solid/liquid electrochemical interfacial characterization for energy science using in situ and operando “tender” x-ray ambient pressure x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (APXPS).
Carolyn Larabell (director of the National Center for X-Ray Tomography and MBIB faculty scientist) received the Director’s Award for Exceptional Scientific Achievement “for pioneering a 3-D imaging technique to visualize cell architecture, soft X-ray tomography microscopy, and enabling the visualization of chromatin compaction and reorganization during neurogenesis.”
Christine Beavers (now a scientist at Diamond Light Source), Dula Parkinson (staff scientist), Ina Reichel (ATAP senior engineering associate), Tom Scarvie (accelerator and floor operations supervisor), Doug Taube (chemical safety specialist), and Ashley White (communications director) received the Director’s Award for Exceptional Achievement in Outreach “for their dedication to outreach in support of high-quality educational programming through tours of the Advanced Light Source and the development of related educational content.”
