This month, I wanted to make the ALS user community aware of a new (virtual) seminar series entitled, “The Science Enabled by ALS-U.” The goal of this seminar series is to provide ALS users with information about science enabled by diffraction-limited light sources worldwide so that they can better understand the potential of coherent techniques and imagine new ways of doing science with x-rays. Many facilities across the world are undergoing upgrades, and with these seminars, we hope to give examples of emergent research modalities which will make the pain of shutdowns worthwhile.
The seminar is organized by the ALS Users’ Executive Committee, and it is open to all ALS users and prospective users. It’s held typically on the first Friday of each month at 12:10pm PDT (unless the speaker’s time zone necessitates a different time). Information about past and future speakers can be found here.
Additionally, I wanted to let the user community know that the UEC recently joined forces with the other user committees from all the DOE light sources to send a letter to the Senate and House Appropriations Subcommittees on Energy and Water Development. In the letter, we highlighted the critical contributions light sources have made to scientific innovation and development of new technologies, and we urged Congress to continue to support their operations and essential improvements.
