In an event aptly titled “Zahid Fest,” ALS staff held a scientific symposium and celebration honoring the career of long-time Scientific Support Group Deputy Zahid Hussain and wishing him well in retirement. The day-long event featured scientific and biographical talks from a star-studded cast of researchers who have collaborated with Hussain over the years as well as a round of individual acknowledgements. 2018 ALS User Meeting Award Nominations Due July 13
The ALS Users’ Executive Committee invites nominations from everyone – including students, postdocs, PIs, and staff – for the 2018 ALS User Meeting Awards. Consider preparing a nomination for a deserving colleague or group of individuals for one of the three awards. In addition to the award plaque, there will be a cash prize associated with each award. Beamline Scientist Ethan Crumlin Receives DOE Early Career Award
Ethan Crumlin is one of six Berkeley Lab scientists selected by DOE’s Office of Science to receive Early Career Research Program awards. Crumlin’s award, for “Discovering the Mechanisms and Properties of Electrochemical Reactions at Solid/Liquid Interfaces,” will combine operando spectroscopy and microscopy techniques, modeling, and computation to gain insight into interactions between electrodes and electrolytes. Steve Kevan Named Next Director of the Advanced Light Source
After an international search, Stephen “Steve” Kevan has been named the new director of the Advanced Light Source. Kevan, a condensed matter physicist, had served as ALS director in an interim capacity since January. Previously, Kevan was the ALS division deputy for science for more than five years. Read more »

ALS to Host 6th Diffraction-Limited Storage Ring Workshop
Registration is now open for the 6th International Diffraction-Limited Storage Ring (DLSR) Workshop, which will be hosted by the ALS on October 29-31, 2018. The workshop will address both the technical challenges and the new research opportunities at fourth-generation x-ray facilities enabled by multibend achromat lattices. Plenary presentations and breakout sessions will feature updates on current DLSR projects, accelerator designs, experimental systems, and emerging science opportunities. Read more »
Will Chueh, Assistant Professor and UEC Chair
For more than 10 years, Will Chueh has been an ALS user. He started coming to the ALS as a grad student using one technique, and now, as an assistant professor at Stanford University, his group uses multiple techniques and multiple user facilities to better understand energy storage materials. Meet Leda: Mother of Light
In Greek mythology, Leda is a Spartan queen and mother of the twins Castor and Pollux. In reference to the myth, Leda is also the name of the ALS’s recently delivered insertion device—an in-vacuum undulator. For the next eight months, Leda is taking up residence in the Building 15 high bay, awaiting installation during the January 2019 shutdown. Read more »
