In recognition of a lack of representation for the biosciences on the Users’ Executive Committee, a special election was held in accordance with UEC bylaws, and Grant Shoffner was selected to represent the biosciences community for a one-year term (2024).

Register Your Arrival Date for ALS Access
Reminder! If coming onsite to conduct experiments, you must register your arrival date 3 weeks (U.S. citizens) or 6 weeks (non-U.S. citizens) before your experiment to guarantee access. March 6 Deadline for General User Proposals
The User Office is accepting new General User Proposals (GUPs) from scientists who wish to conduct research at the ALS in the 2024-2 (August–December) cycle. The deadline for submissions is March 6, 2024. Applicants are reminded that they may request joint access to the Molecular Foundry, a nanoscience user facility at Berkeley Lab, to support their ALS activities. Read more »
LAAAMP-Funded Team Makes a Journey of Miles and Nanometers
Celline Awino Omondi and Miller Shatsala traveled over 9,400 miles to study samples at the nanometer scale. Through a LAAAMP grant, the Kenyan scientists spent two months at Berkeley Lab preparing and characterizing perovskite samples—work that they hope will bring solar energy to Africa. Read more »

ALS at 30
October 5, 2023, marks 30 years since first light at the ALS. Over this time, the number of beamlines grew to more than 40, as many as 2,100 users have come to the facility each year, and over 16,000 publications have resulted from work here.
