ALS Introduces New Organizational Structure for Science

The ALS has recently reorganized its scientific structure. The newly formed Photon Science Group will encompass science, operations, and development related to beamlines. A separate Science Council and groups organized around cross-cutting science thrusts will advise ALS management on strategy, launch new initiatives, and form collaborations. Read more »

The User Meeting early registration deadline of September 16 is fast approaching. This year’s event features an exciting new format designed especially with students and early career scientists in mind. We will also celebrate the ALS’s 25th anniversary with retrospective talks about how the ALS was built and how our science has evolved over time. Read more »

2018 Shutdown Recap

Users have returned to the ALS after a six-week summer shutdown. Among the many small and large changes, we performed a major upgrade of the HVAC system that will stabilize the temperature throughout the experimental hall. None of the changes will affect the delivery of light. Read more »

Sarah Tolbert to Chair ALS General Sciences Proposal Study Panel

The General Sciences Proposal Study Panel (PSP) oversees the evaluation of General User and Approved Program proposals for the general sciences, meeting twice yearly. Beginning October 1, 2018, Sarah Tolbert (UCLA) will serve as chair, taking over from long-time chair Peter Johnson (Brookhaven). Read more »

Registration Opens Next Week for the 2018 ALS User Meeting: October 2–4

This year’s user meeting features an exciting new format designed especially with students and early career scientists in mind. In addition to the always-popular science workshops, the UEC is pleased to announce more tutorials geared towards introducing new and seasoned users to various techniques, tools, and instrumentation. We will also celebrate the ALS’s 25th anniversary with retrospective talks about how the ALS was built and how our science has evolved over time. Read more »

Join the ALS Live on Facebook on Friday, July 27

A Berkeley Lab livestream event will take you inside the ALS on Friday, July 27, from 1:30-2:00 pm PT. The event is geared toward all ages, so tell your favorite young scientists to tune in at https://facebook.com/BerkeleyLab/. Sol Omolayo will show how vacuums keep the ALS running, and Monika Blum and Ethan Crumlin will explain the work at their beamline.

September 5 Deadline for General User Proposals

The User Office is accepting new General User Proposals (GUPs) from scientists who wish to conduct research at the ALS in the 2019-1 (January–July) cycle. The deadline for submissions is September 5, 2018. Applicants are reminded that they may request joint access to the Molecular Foundry, a nanoscience user facility at Berkeley Lab, to support their ALS activities. Read more »

2018 ALS User Meeting Award Nominations Due July 13

The ALS Users’ Executive Committee invites nominations from everyone – including students, postdocs, PIs, and staff – for the 2018 ALS User Meeting Awards. Consider preparing a nomination for a deserving colleague or group of individuals for one of the three awards. In addition to the award plaque, there will be a cash prize associated with each award. ALS to Host 6th Diffraction-Limited Storage Ring Workshop

Registration is now open for the 6th International Diffraction-Limited Storage Ring (DLSR) Workshop, which will be hosted by the ALS on October 29-31, 2018. The workshop will address both the technical challenges and the new research opportunities at fourth-generation x-ray facilities enabled by multibend achromat lattices. Plenary presentations and breakout sessions will feature updates on current DLSR projects, accelerator designs, experimental systems, and emerging science opportunities. Read more »
