Zahid Hussain and Ashley White to Be Honored by Professional Societies
Zahid Hussain, recently retired deputy for the former ALS Scientific Support Group, will receive the American Physical Society’s Joseph F. Keithley Award for Advances in Measurement Science in Spring 2019. Ashley White, ALS communications director, will be presented the Materials Research Society’s Woody White Service Award at the Fall 2018 meeting.
Mike Martin and Hendrik Ohldag Named 2018 APS Fellows
Two ALS scientists have been named Fellows of the American Physical Society. Mike Martin, a senior scientist and operations lead for the Photon Science Group is recognized “for the advancement of synchrotron infrared spectroscopy including the development of synchrotron infrared nanospectroscopy and 3D FTIR tomography.” Hendrik Ohldag, a staff scientist who joined the ALS earlier this month, is recognized “for contributions to unique insight into complex magnetic materials with unprecedented spatial and temporal resolution using novel x-ray techniques.” Read more »

ALS Introduces New Organizational Structure for Science
The ALS has recently reorganized its scientific structure. The newly formed Photon Science Group will encompass science, operations, and development related to beamlines. A separate Science Council and groups organized around cross-cutting science thrusts will advise ALS management on strategy, launch new initiatives, and form collaborations. Read more »

2018 Shutdown Recap
Users have returned to the ALS after a six-week summer shutdown. Among the many small and large changes, we performed a major upgrade of the HVAC system that will stabilize the temperature throughout the experimental hall. None of the changes will affect the delivery of light. Read more »
Sarah Tolbert to Chair ALS General Sciences Proposal Study Panel
The General Sciences Proposal Study Panel (PSP) oversees the evaluation of General User and Approved Program proposals for the general sciences, meeting twice yearly. Beginning October 1, 2018, Sarah Tolbert (UCLA) will serve as chair, taking over from long-time chair Peter Johnson (Brookhaven). Read more »
