The ALS has recently reorganized its scientific structure. The newly formed Photon Science Group will encompass science, operations, and development related to beamlines. A separate Science Council and groups organized around cross-cutting science thrusts will advise ALS management on strategy, launch new initiatives, and form collaborations. Read more »

2018 Shutdown Recap
Users have returned to the ALS after a six-week summer shutdown. Among the many small and large changes, we performed a major upgrade of the HVAC system that will stabilize the temperature throughout the experimental hall. None of the changes will affect the delivery of light. Read more »
Sarah Tolbert to Chair ALS General Sciences Proposal Study Panel
The General Sciences Proposal Study Panel (PSP) oversees the evaluation of General User and Approved Program proposals for the general sciences, meeting twice yearly. Beginning October 1, 2018, Sarah Tolbert (UCLA) will serve as chair, taking over from long-time chair Peter Johnson (Brookhaven). Read more »

A Berkeley Lab livestream event will take you inside the ALS on Friday, July 27, from 1:30-2:00 pm PT. September 5 Deadline for General User Proposals
The User Office is accepting new General User Proposals (GUPs) from scientists who wish to conduct research at the ALS in the 2019-1 (January–July) cycle. The deadline for submissions is September 5, 2018. Applicants are reminded that they may request joint access to the Molecular Foundry, a nanoscience user facility at Berkeley Lab, to support their ALS activities. Read more »

The ALS Users’ Executive Committee invites nominations from everyone – including students, postdocs, PIs, and staff – for the 2018 ALS User Meeting Awards. ALS to Host 6th Diffraction-Limited Storage Ring Workshop
Registration is now open for the 6th International Diffraction-Limited Storage Ring (DLSR) Workshop, which will be hosted by the ALS on October 29-31, 2018. The workshop will address both the technical challenges and the new research opportunities at fourth-generation x-ray facilities enabled by multibend achromat lattices. Plenary presentations and breakout sessions will feature updates on current DLSR projects, accelerator designs, experimental systems, and emerging science opportunities. Read more »
