Operations (PSO)
PSO staff collaborate with and support researchers using ALS-operated beamlines. The degree of collaboration can range from technical assistance with the beamline to full partnership in developing new research programs, scientific capabilities, and endstations. PSO also strives to expand the ALS scientific program and broaden its user base by inventing new techniques, performing demonstration experiments, giving presentations, and publishing results.
Development (PSD)
PSD staff perform fundamental and applied research and development for optical elements and systems, photon diagnostics, new beamlines, and experimental endstations. As much as scientific investigation drives instrumentation development, we also recognize that scientific progress emerges from new capabilities, including those tailored to new light source properties. PSD works closely with scientific staff to develop and test new experimental techniques and provides support for the maintenance and upgrade of scientific systems around the ALS. PSD also participates in long-term strategic planning for the ALS scientific and technical program, with a special focus on the creation of coherent, diffraction-limited beamlines and optical systems.
