Antoine Wojdyla Receives Prestigious Five-Year Research Grant
Antoine Wojdyla is one of three scientists at Berkeley Lab selected by the U.S. Department of Energy’s Office of Science to receive funding through the Early Career Research Program (ECRP). His project is titled DREAM beam: Diffraction-limited Radiation Enhancement with Adaptive Mirrors for X-ray coherent beamlines. Read more »

Kenneth Goldberg Named 2022 Optica Fellow
Kenneth Goldberg, a staff scientist at the ALS and with the ALS-U Project, has been elected a 2022 Fellow of Optica (formerly OSA). His recognition is “for seminal contributions to the development of x-ray optics for applications requiring coherent light.” Read more »

2021 User Meeting Highlights
The Advanced Light Source (ALS) held its annual user meeting August 10–13, 2021, co-chaired by Users’ Executive Committee (UEC) members Alex Frano and Hope Michelsen. Machine-Learning Team Receives 2021 Halbach Award
This year’s Halbach Award for Innovative Instrumentation at the ALS went to a team of accelerator physicists and computer scientists who were able to use machine-learning techniques to solve a problem that has plagued third-generation light sources for a long time: fluctuations in beam size due to the motion of insertion devices.
