Our Vision
The ALS’s vision is to be the premier synchrotron facility where team science and cutting-edge light source technologies converge to drive scientific discovery and address pressing global challenges. To realize this vision, we will upgrade the ALS through the ALS-U project to a fourth-generation diffraction-limited electron storage-ring facility, which will increase the soft x-ray coherent flux 100-fold and usher in a new era that we refer to as ALS 2.0.
Our Plan
The Advanced Light Source’s 5-year strategic plan outlines our unwavering commitment to support the successful completion of the ALS-U project, deliver world-class scientific capabilities, integrate robust safety and business management, and cultivate a vibrant user community and sustainable workforce. By accomplishing the plan’s goals, the ALS will remain at the forefront of innovation, tackling global scientific challenges—from energy and environmental sustainability to human health—for many decades to come.
The plan was shaped through a collaborative effort over the past year, incorporating valuable insights from ALS staff, our partners, and the user community.
