ALS Structural Biology Beamlines Surpass 10,000 Protein Structures in the PDB
Today, the nine structural biology beamlines at the ALS passed a major milestone of collectively depositing over 10,000 protein structures into the Protein Data Bank (PDB), a worldwide, open-access repository of protein structures. Read more »
2025 Winter Shutdown Recap
After another busy shutdown, the ALS is in the process of returning to user operation later this week. The ALS-U accomplishments of the Winter 2025 shutdown include the accumulator ring installation sectors 1-11, seismic upgrades, ALS-U cable routing and electrical installation, RF infrastructure installation, and the booster bend power supply commissioning. In addition, the teams were able to complete several projects for the current ALS. Read more »
Native American Interns Explore Engineering Opportunities at the Lab
This last summer, Berkeley Lab hosted three students from Navajo Technical University in a DOE-funded initiative that partners national labs with learning institutions whose populations are historically underrepresented in science. The goal is to increase enrollment of Native American students in Navajo Tech engineering programs. Read more »

Engaging Future Scientists: Hosting Scouts at the ALS for Nuclear Science Day
As part of the Berkeley Lab’s Nuclear Science Division’s Nuclear Science Day, the ALS hosted 180 local scouts and 50 leaders for a day of science exploration around the light source. Activities included building electroscopes, detecting radon, and exploring particle detectors, with tours showcasing nuclear science at the Advanced Light Source. Read more »
Summer 2024 Shutdown Recap
The ALS is back in user operation after more than two months of shutdown. By now, more than 80% of the Accumulator Ring (AR) has been installed, as well as both of its radio frequency (RF) cavities. A number of other tasks were also completed. Read more »
