Updates to On-Site Access Procedures and Vaccination Requirements

Berkeley Lab requires that all on-site facility users be fully vaccinated against COVID-19 unless they have an approved exception. Processing of access requests will take longer than usual, and we ask all users who plan to come on-site to provide their arrival date at LBNL via ALSHub at least 4-8 weeks before their arrival. U.S. Energy Secretary Granholm Visits Berkeley Lab

In a visit to Berkeley Lab on August 20, Secretary Granholm and Congresswoman Barbara Lee met doctoral fellow Mikayla Barry at ALS Beamline 9.3.1. They also heard about extreme ultraviolet lithography and how protein crystallography enabled critical COVID research and Jennifer Doudna’s work on CRISPR. Read more »

September 1 Proposal Deadline and COVID updates

The ALS is committed to supporting the science of our users, and we’re looking forward to welcoming back more on-site users this fall while continuing to support remote experiments. Please review the requirements for access to the ALS and remember to submit your proposals for the next cycle by 11:59 p.m. Pacific on September 1. Read more »

September 1 Deadline for General User Proposals

The User Office is accepting new General User Proposals (GUPs) from scientists who wish to conduct research at the ALS in the 2022-1 (January–July) cycle. The deadline for submissions is September 1, 2021. Applicants are reminded that they may request joint access to the Molecular Foundry, a nanoscience user facility at Berkeley Lab, to support their ALS activities. Read more »

Survey on Remote Access

The ALS and the Users’ Executive Committee would like to better understand the impact this past year’s restrictions had on the user community as well as seek suggestions on possible improvements that would facilitate future beamtime. Register for the 2021 User Meeting (August 10–13)

This year’s User Meeting features, for the first time, a Nobel panel (and Q&A) with Ada Yonath and Stanley Whittingham. Bookmark workshops and tutorials that interest you so that the organizers know how many participants to expect. Operating Schedule Updates

The operating schedule for the 2021-2 cycle will be published in a few days. The summer shutdown will begin July 3 and run into September. More information on subsequent shutdowns is anticipated by early fall. ALS User Kelsey Stoerzinger Receives NSF CAREER Award

Stoerzinger was chosen for this prestigious award for her proposal to study how to “split” seawater into hydrogen and oxygen gas while avoiding undesirable, chloride-containing byproducts. Hydrogen has many scientific, industrial and energy-related roles, including in fuel cells for cars. Read more »
