RIXS Program

Resonant inelastic x-ray scattering (RIXS) spectroscopy provides direct information about elementary excitations, such as crystal field splitting, charge transfer, and excitations in spin, charge, orbital, and lattice degrees of freedom. RIXS systems also collect conventional x-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) and x-ray emission spectroscopy (XES), which measure unoccupied and occupied electronic structure, respectively. These excitations and electronic states fundamentally define all the novel chemical and physical properties of energy materials for specific functionalities and quantum materials with strong electronic correlations.

The RIXS Program at the ALS manages several RIXS systems covering a wide range of instrumentation and science: full-energy-range fast mapping of RIXS (mRIXS) spectra, various in situ/operando RIXS, XAS and XES capabilities (wetRIXS), and high-efficiency momentum-resolved RIXS (qRIXS). Additionally, two high-resolution RIXS beamlines—AMBER for energy materials research and QERLIN for quantum materials research—are under construction/commissioning. These current and future RIXS projects will excel in the areas of quantum materials, energy materials, catalysis, and chemistry for research in both practical materials and fundamental science.
