Nobumichi Tamura Receives 2019 Klaus Halbach Award
Nobumichi Tamura received the 2019 Klaus Halbach Award in recognition for the software he developed to analyze microdiffraction data. The first version of the software was completed just before Christmas 1999 and has been a gift for many in the community ever since. Read more »
Padraic Shafer to Receive the 2019 Shirley Award
Congratulations to Padraic Shafer, this year’s recipient of the Shirley Award for Outstanding Scientific Achievement! Shafer, ALS staff scientist and leader of the ALS’s dichroism program, is being recognized “for unveiling the nature of chiral quantum materials through the innovative use of x-ray scattering at the Advanced Light Source.” Read more »

Maggie Zhuyun Xiao Awarded Best Student Presentation
Congratulations to Maggie Zhuyun Xiao, who earned the award at the Joint MMM-Intermag Conference for her presentation, “Single Domain Magnetoelastic Terfenol-D Microdisks for Particle and Cell Manipulation.” Maggie is an ALS Doctoral Fellow in Residence working with ALS Senior Scientist Elke Arenholz.
Zahid Hussain Honored with DOE Secretary’s Award
Former ALS Deputy for Scientific Support Zahid Hussain was honored with a Department of Energy Secretary’s Distinguished Service Award. The award is one of the highest scientific honors given by Energy Secretary Rick Perry, recognizing “continuous and distinctive achievements.” Read more »
ALS Staff Honored with Berkeley Lab Director’s Awards
ALS staff were recognized by Berkeley Lab Director Mike Witherell at the annual director’s awards ceremony on November 30. Zahid Hussain received the Berkeley Lab Citation; Ethan Crumlin was recognized for receiving a DOE Early Career Research Award earlier this year, and also received the Director’s Award for Exceptional Early Scientific Career Achievement; Carolyn Larabell received the Director’s Award for Exceptional Scientific Achievement; and Christine Beavers, Dula Parkinson, Ina Reichel, Tom Scarvie, Doug Taube, and Ashley White received the Director’s Award for Exceptional Achievement in Outreach. COSMIC Ptychography Team Receives 2018 Klaus Halbach Award
The 2018 Klaus Halbach Award for Innovative Instrumentation at the ALS was presented at the annual User Meeting to the COSMIC ptychography team “for the development of the microscopy endstation at the COSMIC beamline, featuring an ultra-stable x-ray microscope, computational methods for data reconstruction, and a high-speed data acquisition system.” Read more »
Zahid Hussain and Ashley White to Be Honored by Professional Societies
Zahid Hussain, recently retired deputy for the former ALS Scientific Support Group, will receive the American Physical Society’s Joseph F. Keithley Award for Advances in Measurement Science in Spring 2019. Ashley White, ALS communications director, will be presented the Materials Research Society’s Woody White Service Award at the Fall 2018 meeting.
Bob Gassaway Receives 2018 Tim Renner User Services Award
Bob Gassaway was awarded the 2018 Tim Renner User Services Award for his longstanding commitment to simultaneously supporting the ALS user community and advancing electrical safety at the ALS. Gassaway is an electronics engineering technologist who has been at Berkeley Lab for 30 years. Read more »
