Past, present, and future converged at the 2018 ALS User Meeting, where attendees celebrated the 25th anniversary of first light and CD-1 approval of the ALS Upgrade project. Mike Martin and Hendrik Ohldag Named 2018 APS Fellows
Two ALS scientists have been named Fellows of the American Physical Society. Mike Martin, a senior scientist and operations lead for the Photon Science Group is recognized “for the advancement of synchrotron infrared spectroscopy including the development of synchrotron infrared nanospectroscopy and 3D FTIR tomography.” Hendrik Ohldag, a staff scientist who joined the ALS earlier this month, is recognized “for contributions to unique insight into complex magnetic materials with unprecedented spatial and temporal resolution using novel x-ray techniques.” Read more »
Pupa Gilbert to Receive the 2018 Shirley Award
Pupa Gilbert, professor of physics at the University of Wisconsin at Madison, is the 2018 recipient of the David A. Shirley Award for Outstanding Scientific Achievement at the ALS, “for her development of polarization-dependent imaging contrast mapping to image the orientation of carbonate nanocrystals in marine biominerals.” Read more »
2018 ALS User Meeting Award Nominations Due July 13
The ALS Users’ Executive Committee invites nominations from everyone – including students, postdocs, PIs, and staff – for the 2018 ALS User Meeting Awards. Beamline Scientist Ethan Crumlin Receives DOE Early Career Award
Ethan Crumlin is one of six Berkeley Lab scientists selected by DOE’s Office of Science to receive Early Career Research Program awards. Crumlin’s award, for “Discovering the Mechanisms and Properties of Electrochemical Reactions at Solid/Liquid Interfaces,” will combine operando spectroscopy and microscopy techniques, modeling, and computation to gain insight into interactions between electrodes and electrolytes. Former ALS Operations Deputy “Banda” Receives Berkeley Lab Citation
Banda, ALS senior advisor and former ALS operations deputy, was presented the Berkeley Lab Citation at the 2017 Director’s Awards for Exceptional Achievement ceremony. The Citation recognizes extraordinary achievements in broad categories of science and operations, with special focus on service to the Lab and/or the DOE national lab complex. Read more »
Dmitriy Voronov Receives Klaus Halbach Award
The 2017 Klaus Halbach Award for Innovative Instrumentation at the ALS was recently awarded to ALS Staff Scientist Dmitriy Voronov “for pioneering work in the area of advanced x-ray gratings.” The research that led up to Voronov’s award began about 10 years ago when he started at the ALS in the Experimental Systems Group with Howard Padmore. Natalie Larson Awarded Neville Smith Student Poster Prize
Natalie Larson, a current ALS doctoral fellow from UC Santa Barbara, won the first prize Neville B. Smith Student Poster Award at the 2017 ALS User Meeting. Larson’s winning poster featured the first two big in situ experiments she performed at Beamline 8.3.2. Read more »
