Changes to Proposals for January–July 2026
The ALS-U project is evaluating a potential schedule shift, including a shutdown for dark time starting summer 2026. Since an earlier dark time is possible, our goal is to ensure active proposals receive needed beamtime and make beamtime requests accessible when possible. March 5, 2025, Deadline for General User Proposals—Updated Proposal Writing Guidelines!
The User Office is accepting new General User Proposals (GUPs) from scientists who wish to conduct research at the ALS in the 2025-2 (August–December) cycle. The deadline for submissions is March 5, 2025. Please review the updated proposal guidelines, with thanks to feedback from proposal submitters and reviewers. Additional beamtime cycles will be run before the ALS-U dark time, and we will share more information as it becomes available. Read more »
September 4 Deadline for General User Proposals—New Proposal Writing Guidelines!
Starting August 14, the User Office will accept new General User Proposals (GUPs) from scientists who wish to conduct research at the ALS in the 2025-1 (January–July) cycle. The deadline for submissions is September 4, 2024. We will publish new proposal writing guidelines by August 14, so please read the new guidelines before submitting a proposal. Applicants are reminded that they may request joint access to the Molecular Foundry, a nanoscience user facility at Berkeley Lab, to support their ALS activities. Read more »

Register Your Arrival Date for ALS Access
Reminder! If coming onsite to conduct experiments, you must register your arrival date 3 weeks (U.S. citizens) or 6 weeks (non-U.S. citizens) before your experiment to guarantee access. A calculator is now provided in ALSHub to show you how many weeks in advance you are requesting access. Read more »
