Experiment Safety Assessment Form (ESAF) to Replace ESS
The ALS is transitioning from the Experiment Safety Sheet (ESS) to the Experiment Safety Assessment Form (ESAF). Although the ESS software will continue to be available for several months, we will encourage most users to use the ESAF system. Follow instructions in your email reminder to access the appropriate system for your beamline. For beam time after April 12, most users will be expected to use the new ESAF tool. Read more »

Notification of General User Proposal Results
The Proposal Study Panel (PSP) met on October 20 to oversee and finalize the scoring of General User Proposals for the 2018-1 January–July operating cycle and to make recommendations to the ALS Scientific Advisory Committee (SAC) on Approved Program applications. Beam time allocations for General User Proposals are completed, and users have been notified to view the results by logging in to ALSHub. Approved Program results will be announced shortly. New Open Access Requirements
To comply with DOE’s Public Access Plan, Berkeley Lab must ensure that open-access versions of publications co-authored by Lab employees are included in DOE’s open-access system. If you co-author work with a Lab scientist, please note that the scientist may ask you for an open-access version of the manuscript. We request that you cooperate with our scientists in a timely fashion and provide manuscripts to satisfy this DOE requirement when asked. Read more »
ALS User Forum Returns on Thursdays
The User Forum, also known as “Cookie Time,” has returned to the ALS. Every other Thursday at 3 p.m., ALS users and staff are invited to mix and mingle in the downstairs lobby over cookies and coffee. The ALS operating schedule lists specific dates for the events. Read more »
Andrea Jones, ALS Proposal Coordinator
Andi Jones joined the ALS User Services Office as proposal coordinator last April and has taken over the processing and tracking of General User, RAPIDD, and Approved Program proposals. She also maintains the ALS publications database and serves as a point of contact for users who have beamtime or proposal questions. Read more »
New ALS Scheduler Tool to Access Beamline Schedules
As part of the ongoing effort to provide users and staff improved tools to track their proposals, safety, and beam time, the ALS has rolled out the ALS Scheduler. For cycle 2017-1 and future cycles, ALS beamline schedules will be displayed through this new software tool designed to provide centralized access to all beamline schedules. Read more »
